McDowell Trojans Hockey is pleased to announce our new coaching staff for the upcoming 2021-2022 season.
Alex Luddy – Director of Hockey & Varsity Head Coach
Luddy was born and raised in Erie, PA and comes to McDowell with a proven track record on the ice and on the bench. Luddy played with Erie Youth Hockey, AAA Cleveland Barons MWEHL and Junior Hockey with NAHL/AJHL where he competed at high levels nationally. He attended Penn State University where he obtained his Bachelors. Luddy started coaching high school in 2012 as a AAA Junior Varsity coach. In 2017 he moved into the AAA Head Varsity role. He brings 10 years of high school coaching experience to McDowell. Luddy looks to expand on the foundation that has been built and to take Trojans Hockey to the next level.
Chris Wassel – Varsity Assistant Coach & Special Teams Coach
Wassel bring 30 years of hockey experiences to McDowell. He started his hockey journey at 5 years old with Erie Youth Hockey. Wassel began his high school coaching career with AAA Junior Varsity in 2018. Beyond high school, he serves as a coach for the Central Region U16 team for the Pennsylvania Keystone Games. In addition to coaching, Wassel’s background in higher education helps him develop players in life skills through the game of hockey.
Greg Cox – Varsity Assistant Coach & Defensive Coach
Cox has been playing hockey in Erie since childhood. He will bring a decade of middle school, Junior Varsity and AAA Varsity experience to McDowell. In addition to his high school experience, Cox has also coached several house, select and travel teams for Erie Youth Hockey Association.
Jake Heller – Varsity Assistant Coach & Defensive Coach
Heller grew up in Stokie, IL and played for the Chicago Young Americans (AAA MWEHL). He played for the Wellington Dukes in the OPJHL and came to Erie by playing for the Erie Otters from 2001- 2006. Heller finished his career with the Johnstown Chiefs in the ECHL. Heller is a McDowell alumni and looks forward to giving back to a sport and school that gave him so much.
Bob Kowallis – Junior Varsity Head Coach
Kowallis has been an Erie resident since 1996. He has been coaching hockey for 18 years at numerous levels including but not limited to Learn to Skate, House, Travel and Middle School Hockey. Kowallis will focus on skill-building with an emphasis on edgework, change of direction, puck possession and puck support as well as many other areas preparing the players for Varsity Hockey. Kowallis will be assisted by Junior Varsity Coaches Tim Pagano and Nick Jenkins.
Nate Miller – Goalie Coach
Nate Miller brings lifetime of goalie expertise to the Trojans program. As a youth Miller played for the AAA Jr Penguins. He was selected for the USA Hockey National Development Camp. In 2011 he was drafted by the Erie Otters and was invited back to the U17 National Development Camp. Miller played Jr. A for the Toledo Cherokee (NA3HL) and the Winkler Flyers (MJHL). For the past 2 years he has been a coach in the Jr Otters program, most recently as assistant coach for the 16U team. He is USA Army Veteran in the Airborne Division.
Dan Miller – Junior Varsity Player Development Coach
Dan Miller once again brings an incredible range of knowledge that will be invaluable to our young players. Miller played for the Pittsburgh Hornets and was invited to the USA National Development camps for 14 and 15U. He was drafted to 16U Windsor Spitfires and played Pens Elite for 2 years. He finished playing career due to injury in the Manitoba Jr Hockey League. He has most recently been the head coach for 16U Jr Otters team.
